About Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA)

Introduction

The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA) is a national initiative of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, aimed at creating awareness regarding the harmful effects of substance use and strengthening collective efforts towards a drug-free India.

The Abhiyan was launched on 15 August 2020 and has subsequently been extended across the country. It places emphasis on preventive education, awareness generation, community participation and appropriate linkage with counselling, treatment, rehabilitation and support services. Educational institutions are important stakeholders in this national effort, particularly in promoting awareness and healthy, responsible behaviour among young people.

Objectives

The major objectives of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan include:

  • To create awareness regarding the physical, psychological and social consequences of substance use.
  • To promote preventive education and responsible behaviour among students and young people.
  • To encourage active participation of educational institutions, youth and the community in creating a drug-free environment.
  • To promote early identification, appropriate counselling and linkage with available treatment and rehabilitation services, wherever required.
  • To reduce stigma associated with substance-use-related problems and encourage individuals and families to seek appropriate help.
  • To strengthen community participation and coordinated efforts for prevention of substance abuse.

To contribute towards the development of a healthy, aware, responsible and drug-free society through prevention, education, community participation and coordinated action.

Mission

To strengthen awareness and preventive initiatives among students, faculty, staff and the community; promote healthy and responsible lifestyles; and facilitate appropriate information, counselling and referral support related to substance-use prevention.

Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan at College of Nursing, Kanpur

College of Nursing, G.S.V.M. Medical College Campus, Kanpur is committed to supporting the objectives of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan through structured awareness, preventive education and community-oriented activities.

As a nursing education institution, the College recognises the important role of nursing students and faculty in health education, prevention, early identification, counselling support and community awareness. The College therefore seeks to integrate the message of substance-use prevention into appropriate educational, extracurricular and community outreach activities.

The implementation of NMBA activities at the College is undertaken in accordance with the directions and communications received from the competent authorities, including Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University (ABVMU) and the Directorate General of Medical Education (DGME), Government of Uttar Pradesh.

Role of the College

The College shall promote the objectives of NMBA through appropriate institutional activities, including:

  • Awareness and educational programmes for students and staff.
  • Anti-drug pledge and awareness campaigns.
  • Seminars, lectures, workshops and other educational activities.
  • Student participation in awareness and community outreach programmes.
  • Dissemination of scientifically appropriate information and IEC material.
  • Promotion of healthy and responsible lifestyles.
  • Documentation of activities through reports, attendance records and photographic/video evidence.
  • Display and dissemination of relevant Government and University communications.
  • Regular updating of NMBA-related activities and documentation on the official College website.

Commitment to a Drug-Free Campus

The College of Nursing, G.S.V.M. Medical College Campus, Kanpur is committed to promoting a safe, healthy, responsible and drug-free educational environment.

Through education, awareness, student participation and community engagement, the College will contribute to the national objective of preventing substance abuse and strengthening a healthier society.

The College will continue to undertake NMBA-related activities in accordance with the directions of the competent authorities and maintain appropriate institutional documentation and evidence of activities undertaken.
